Geneviève et Matthieu (Quebec, Canada)

Saturday, October 7 @ VIVO Media Arts Centre

 L’empire de la création (The Empire of Creation) is a polyphonic writing project that portrays the voice of ambitious marginal artists whose destiny has not yet been played. Performative intrigues, manipulations of art, transformations of states. It is through a choral and visual work, an installation and an epic soundtrack that an unorganized territory unfolds into a living picture, almost alive.

“Controlled, under the influence and in the service of, the creators are mostly put aside from any form of power. What if it were otherwise? What if creation was the foundation of the history of our world? By writing a dramatic text that appeals to poetry, opera, theater and visual arts, a dozen characters at the crossroads are brought into play. ”

This performance will be presented in 2017 at LIVE (Vancouver), Axe Néo 7 (Gatineau), L’Écart (Rouyn-Noranda) and 2018 at Jè-st ‘(Moncton) and L’Usine C (Montréal).

Since the early 2000s, we have created pictorial, sculptural, installation, musical and manipulable works. These works propose a performative conception of the art pieces as an extension of our body: paradisiacal visions, power relations between man and nature, rites of passage, duplication, fetishism. The experience of the body that bounces, transforms and blends into painting. A work in constant evolution. In the spirit of a living art, we want to defy the usual modes of presentation, change the place, the duration, the way of exhibiting and performing.

L’empire de la création est un projet d’écriture polyphonique qui met en scène la voix d’artistes marginaux ambitieux dont la destinée n’est pas encore jouée. Intrigues performatives, manipulations d’art, transformations d’états. C’est à travers une œuvre chorale et visuelle, une installation et une trame sonore épique qu’un territoire non organisé se déploie en tableau vivant, presque vivant.

Dans un mouvement perpétuel, les intrigues se rejoignent pour créer une œuvre dans laquelle la mixité des idées, la force du nombre et l’ingénierie sont au cœur de l’empire.

Concept utopique et satirique du milieu de l’art contemporain, L’empire de la création est un exercice de style dont l’intérêt de la prose s’incarne dans le désir d’émancipation de l’artiste et de l’art.

Inspirée par la catharsis, l’intrigue, le livre choral, la musique épique, l’art expressionniste et les séries thriller, cette performance puise dans les codes narratifs des disciplines et ajoute à l’art performance une narration expérimentale et interdisciplinaire.

Geneviève et Matthieu créent depuis la fin des années 1990 un univers strident dans lequel happening musical et installation performative s’entrechoquent avec désinvolture. Inspiré de l’art et la vie, le duo évolue dans un cul-de-sac artistique en tentant de repousser constamment les limites du médium. Impliqués à L’Écart, centre d’artistes en arts actuels et directeurs de la Biennale d’art performatif de Rouyn-Noranda, ils s’investissent activement dans leur communauté.
